In 2386 the Federation entered into an alliance with 3 other star nations; the Amroni, the Vashisk, and the Valon. To give the new alliance a strong, central position in the Amroni sector of space, the Vashisk gave the Federation a base that had been constructed by the Amroni when they originally colonized the area. The base had been constructed on a large planetoid in the Vashisk system's asteroid belt. Starfleet took possession of the base and renamed the planetoid Demonphon. With assistance from the allied worlds, the base on Demophon was brought back into service and Starfleet formed the New Exploration Command as a core of peaceful operations in the Amroni sector. (Military defenses against the Dominion would continue to be commanded from Starbase Gamma, near New Bajor.)

Demophon
A large planetoid in the Vashisk star system. Re-named Demophon when Starfleet took over the abandoned Amroni Base. Named for the Greek prince who Demeter tried to make a god, but the ceremony was interrupted by his mother. The planetoid is over 900km in diameter, but flat and almost disk-shaped. It appears to have been a piece of a much larger body destroyed in some ancient cataclysm. The NEC base on Demophon has 3 primary facilities; Hephestus Shipyards, NEC Command, and Starfleet's Gamma Quadrant extension of the Academy.

Hephaestus Shipyards
A large facility located at the far southern edge of the asteroid. It is not extensive and much of it has not been restored to operational status, but it has facilities for large ships to dock and hangars for smaller craft. There are limited facilities for maintenance and repair at this time. There are also more public facilities as this is the part of Demophon that most visitors see.

NEC Command Center
Located on the flat "upper" side of the planetoid and near the center, this facility resembles a traditional, planet-side Starbase more than the other structures. The facility is partially above ground and partially cut out of the rock. It radiates from a central structure and appears to be several individual buildings connected by underground tunnels.

Starfleet Academy
The Gamma Sector academy for Starfleet officers is located in a mountainous region between the NEC Command Center and the northern edge of the disk. It was originally constructed by the Amroni as a base for the Amroni Colonial Marines. Starfleet found the facility most suitable for use as a school and it now houses the Academy's offices, classrooms, and student dormitories.
